Buprenorphine

Buprenorphine is the primary active ingredient in Suboxone. Buprenorphine is a partial opiate agonist, a quality that makes it a very effective treatment option for opiate addiction. Significant doses of Buprenorphine exert a blocking effect so that other opiates have little effect on the brain.

How long has buprenorphine existed?

For several years, Buprenorphine has been used intraveniously for pain relief. It was not until recently that the sublingual form demonstrated positive results in the treatment of opiate dependancy. Please refer to the manufacturer website for more details.

Can Buprenorphine used for treatment of pain?

Presently, the sublingual form of Buprenorphine is not approved by the FDA for the treatment of pain. However, in our extensive experience, sublingual Buprenorphine exerts a highly significant analgesic effect. In other words, it relieves pain.

Is Buprenorphine habit forming?

Being an opioid, Buprenorphine is somewhat habit forming, but it is much less so than a pure opiate. This property allows the physician to incrementally reduce the amount of buprenorphine. In general this is not the case with other opiates, including Methadone. On a practical basis, with the use of buphrenorphine by an experienced phisician, approximately 70% of opiate dependant patients can eventually become drug free. The remainder of the patients experience a normal life but require a markedly reduced daily dose of Buprenorphine.
